2003 Nissan Frontier 3.3L P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor Code - PCM or Wiring Issue?

Model: 2003 frontier Fault Code: P0335 Posted: 2015-07-04 17:11

I own a 2003 Nissan Frontier 3.3L non-supercharged, automatic transmission, 2WD Desert Runner Edition. The vehicle originally came with a stripped timing belt. I recently replaced the timing belt and successfully reinstalled it—after which the engine started and runs smoothly. However, a persistent P0335 crankshaft position sensor fault code continues to appear. I have already replaced the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor twice, and both times the issue remains unresolved. All wiring appears intact with no visible damage or shorts. Given this, am I likely dealing with a faulty Powertrain Control Module (PCM)? Is there any way to test or diagnose the PCM independently? Any advice on next steps would be greatly appreciated.

The P0335 code indicates a circuit malfunction. Please verify the wiring harness for continuity, open circuits, shorted wires, or ground faults—these are common causes of this error.

Both the Crankshaft and Camshaft Position Sensors should be replaced together. While they are similar components, Nissan dealers typically sell them as a matched pair (calibrated to work in harmony), priced around $70. Aftermarket suppliers often do not offer matching sets, which may lead to inconsistent readings if only one sensor is replaced. Replacing just one sensor frequently fails to resolve the issue.
