2003 Ford Focus XTS 2.0L - P0301 and P0316 Codes: Spark Plug or Cam Sensor Issue?

Model: 2003 Ford FOCUS XTS 2.0 Fault Code: P0301 Posted: 2013-12-27 17:05

I'm seeing both P0301 and P0316 codes on my 2003 Ford Focus XTS 2.0L. I've read that these codes often point to faulty spark plugs or a coil pack, but some sources suggest the camshaft position sensor might be the issue. I haven't done any diagnostics yet—can anyone confirm what's most likely causing this? Any guidance on how to troubleshoot would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Diane

Assuming you don't have an OBD2 scanner, start with diagnosing P0301. Check basic engine parameters: spark presence, injector pulse, and compression. The claim about a 'damaged engine sensor' needs clarification—specifically, which sensor is being referred to? And what symptoms does it exhibit?

I replaced all spark plugs and the coil pack, checked compression (100 psi), performed a smoke test for vacuum leaks—no issues found. After clearing the codes, P0304 reappeared. When accelerating to 3000 RPM, the engine starts cutting out. Anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions on how to resolve it?

A possible cause could be a dirty, restricted, or faulty fuel injector—especially if one cylinder is not firing properly.

I had a similar issue on my 2000 Taurus at 3000 RPM—engine would cut out. Replacing the Cam Position Sensor (CPS) resolved the problem.
