2003 Ford Escape P2195 P2197 P0172 P0174 P0-175 Idle Surge Fix - MAF Sensor Diagnosis

Model: 2003 Escape Fault Code: P0172 Posted: 2015-07-09 11:52

My 2003 Ford Escape 3.0L engine starts normally but begins to surge when idling, especially at stops. The vehicle has been diagnosed with the following OBD-II fault codes: P2195, P2197, P0172, P0174, and P0175. The issue only occurs during idle conditions. When I disconnect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, the engine runs smoothly without any surging or stalling—indicating a strong correlation between the MAF and the problem. However, when the sensor is reconnected, the surge returns and the vehicle may even stall. I've already checked for vacuum leaks by spraying around the intake manifold with soapy water and found no visible leaks. The MAF sensor was also cleaned using a dedicated cleaning solution, but the symptoms persist. Given that removing the MAF resolves the issue completely, I suspect the MAF sensor is faulty or malfunctioning. The surge becomes more noticeable when the air conditioning is turned on, which may exacerbate airflow inconsistencies detected by the sensor. I'm seeking input from other owners of 2003 Ford Escape models—does anyone have experience with these specific codes and idle surging? Are there any alternative causes or diagnostics I should consider before replacing the MAF?

If you don't have access to a scan tool or are not ready to invest more time in troubleshooting, replacing the MAF sensor is a practical first step—especially since disconnecting it eliminates the symptoms. It would be valuable to test whether these codes appear when the MAF is unplugged, as that could confirm if the sensor is causing false readings.

We do have a Snap-on Ultra scanner. I've cleared all the fault codes and haven't seen them return while idling—no new errors appear during short idle runs. However, we haven't driven it yet under real-world conditions to confirm if the codes reappear or if the surge persists. I ordered a replacement MAF sensor today and will update once it arrives and is installed.

Any updates on what happened with your 2003 Ford Escape after replacing the MAF sensor? Did the idle surge resolve or did other issues emerge?
