2003 Dodge SX 2.0L Engine P0016 and P0340 Error Codes - No Spark, Won't Start After CPS Replacement

Model: 2003 Dodge SX Fault Code: P0016 Posted: 2014-02-09 19:06

I own a 2003 Dodge SX with a 2.0L engine and 2L automatic transmission. The vehicle has exceeded 200,000 kilometers. While driving home, it began sputtering, lost power, and eventually stalled completely. Diagnostic checks revealed error codes P0016 and P0340. The car cranks but does not start — no spark is detected. I replaced the Cam Position Sensor (CPS), which initially resolved the error codes; however, the engine still fails to start. I then replaced the ignition coil, but there remains no spark. After the CPS replacement, both P0016 and P0340 codes disappeared, with no other errors appearing. However, I'm unsure whether this is due to the engine not starting or if the underlying issue persists. Replacing the timing belt on this model appears to be a complex task, so I’m hesitant to proceed without confirming it’s the root cause. Any advice on diagnosing or resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.
