2003 Dodge Ram Hemi OBD-II Code P0480 and P0817 Explanation and Diagnosis

Model: 2003 Dodge Ram Fault Code: P0480 Posted: 2006-12-20 14:30

I'm currently working on a 2003 Dodge Ram Hemi engine that has been installed in a 1933 Dodge body. I've completed all the wiring connections, but I'm encountering two OBD-II diagnostic codes: P0480 and P0817. I can't locate any references to these codes in my service manual or online resources. Does anyone know what these codes mean? The engine runs smoothly and I haven't yet installed electric cooling fans or the air conditioning system—my approach is to progress step by step. Any insight into these codes would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help!

P0480 refers to the Cooling Fan 1 Control Circuit malfunction. P0817 indicates a Starter Disable Circuit issue. These codes are common in 2003 Dodge Ram Hemi vehicles and may point to wiring or sensor problems. This information should help clarify the diagnostic path.

I understand that P048-than is likely related to the cooling fan control circuit, but I'm uncertain about the 'Starter Disable Circuit' (P0817). Since my engine starts and runs reliably—regardless of whether the key switch is on or off—I suspect this issue might not be directly tied to a physical starter problem. I'll need to consult the original wiring diagrams to locate this circuit. Could it be related to the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module? That seems plausible given its role in engine start control.

Yes, that would be my first hypothesis—the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module is a likely source of the P0817 code. If the immobilizer system isn't properly communicating or if there's an incorrect key or wiring issue, it could trigger this code even when the engine starts normally.
