2003 Chevy Truck Occasionally Won't Start with P0342 Code After Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement

Model: 2003 Chevy Truck Fault Code: P0342 Posted: 2017-03-18 08:22

I replaced the camshaft position (CMP) sensor on my 2003 Chevrolet truck due to poor engine performance and black exhaust. After the replacement, the truck initially ran fine. However, within a few weeks, it has started exhibiting intermittent starting issues—sometimes it will roll but fail to start completely. I'm now seeing a P0342 diagnostic trouble code (DTC). Any advice on troubleshooting this issue or possible causes? The vehicle seems to respond inconsistently, and I suspect the CMP sensor or related electrical connections may be at fault.

The P0342 code is confirmed—this indicates a problem with the camshaft position sensor signal. It's important to verify that the sensor is properly connected and functioning, as poor electrical contact or corrosion can mimic this fault.

Are there any other diagnostic codes present? Ideally, use an OBD2 scanner to check if the CMP signal is being received by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Also review the freeze frame data for clues about when the failure occurred. Inspect the electrical connector at the camshaft position sensor—ensure it's tight, free of corrosion, and that no pins are bent. Confirm that there is a solid 12V power supply and proper ground connection. The vehicle should start reliably without requiring multiple attempts; if not, there may be additional underlying issues or codes that need investigation.
