2003 Chevrolet Cavalier P0442 Code: Check Engine Light Returns After Vent Valve Replacement and ABS/Trac Off Lights Activate

Model: 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier Fault Code: P0442 Posted: 2014-12-05 11:24

Hello everyone, I'm experiencing a persistent issue with my 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier, which has reached 175,000 miles. The check engine light is on and the OBD2 code P0442 is detected. I initially had a smoke test performed, but it was not completed due to a non-original fuel filler neck and a vent valve that was zip-tied in place. I replaced both the fuel filler neck and installed a genuine vent valve. After clearing the code, the check engine light came back on after 50 miles. A second smoke test was conducted and no leaks were found. The mechanic suspected a faulty vent valve, so I replaced it with a new, OEM part. However, shortly after this replacement, the ABS, Trac Off, and Service warning lights unexpectedly turned on. I've had three wheel bearings replaced since purchasing the vehicle—over a year ago—with the left rear bearing being particularly problematic and recently replaced just weeks ago. Prior to that, those three warning lights were consistently off after the bearing replacements. For some reason, they have reactivated following the vent valve replacement. My current mechanic is unable to identify the root cause. A Ford dealership technician recently scanned the vehicle and suspects a potential issue with the powertrain control module (PCM) or electronic system integration. Could this be related to the vent valve change? Or could there be an underlying electrical or sensor conflict causing the ABS/Trac Off lights to activate? Any insights, troubleshooting steps, or known issues for 2003 Cavalier with P0442 and intermittent ABS light problems would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
