2003 Cadillac Deville P0101 and P1416 Codes: Causes, Diagnosis, and Fixes

My 2003 Cadillac Deville with a standard Northstar V8 engine has reached 108,000 miles. Recently, I've been experiencing both P0101 (Mass Airflow Sensor Range/Performance Problem) and P1416 (Air Bank 2 Fault) diagnostic trouble codes. The car runs smoothly under normal conditions, but it unexpectedly stalled once shortly after starting a few days ago. I have already replaced the air cleaner and inspected the wiring to the MAF sensor. However, I haven't yet cleaned or tested the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor itself—though the sensor screen appears clean. My main question is: Can a faulty MAF sensor cause both P0101 and P1416 to appear? The shop manual advises against troubleshooting P1416 if other codes like P0101 are present, suggesting they may be related. Is there a known common root cause for this combination on the 2003 Deville? My scan tool only reads codes and does not provide live voltage or freeze frame data. The 'Service Engine Soon' light has been intermittent—on for several days, then off, now back on again. I suspect an intermittent issue may have triggered it initially. I am a retired electrical engineer with experience in diagnostics and can perform voltage readings and use an oscilloscope when needed. I plan to clean the MAF sensor soon and will also check all vacuum lines and components related to the air intake system, including solenoids and tubing, for leaks—since vacuum contamination can skew MAF readings and trigger both codes. Can your scanner provide freeze frame data? This could offer valuable context on the conditions when the codes were set. Without a scanner, verify there are no vacuum leaks after the throttle body. Check all vacuum hoses and components—especially those related to the air intake system—for leaks. A leak in this system can distort MAF sensor readings and cause both P0101 and P1416. Try temporarily disconnecting all vacuum lines from the air management system; if the P0101 code clears or becomes less frequent, it would strongly suggest a vacuum-related issue is present.

I originally posted in December 2016 and didn’t pursue this further due to other commitments. Now that the codes have changed, I’m seeing P0101 with P0410 instead of P1416. Recently, the car has exhibited a brief (under one second) hesitation at steady speeds between 60–70 mph with cruise control engaged—this occurs roughly once every 5 to 20 minutes and is very subtle. I’m unsure if this new behavior is linked to the codes, as it wasn’t present when I had both P0101 and P1416. The car now has 120,000 miles with original spark plugs—planning to replace them soon. My scan tool is a basic device without freeze frame capability. As an electrical engineer, I can take voltage readings and use an oscilloscope in the lab, but not while driving. I plan to clean the MAF sensor shortly. I have factory service manuals for this model. Are there any additional diagnostic steps or known issues specific to 2003 Cadillac Devilles that could explain these symptoms? Any suggestions beyond what’s already shared would be helpful.
