2002 Ford Venture P1374 Code: Causes, Diagnosis, and Fix for Intermittent Starting Issues

Model: 2002 venture Fault Code: P1374 Posted: 2008-09-30 22:37

Hi everyone, I'm looking for help diagnosing a P1374 code on my 2002 Ford Venture. The check engine light came on last week, but I didn't scan it until now. I've already replaced the intake gaskets twice due to a coolant leak — the repair went well except for one harness plug that I can't remember unplugging and still can't locate its mate. The car runs fine most of the time, but I'm experiencing an intermittent starting problem: it fires up initially but then fails to run consistently. I've found multiple definitions for P1374 online, but I'm not sure where to begin. Any advice on how to troubleshoot this code or what components to inspect would be greatly appreciated.

The P137-4 code indicates a 3X signal issue from the intake control (IC) module. Check the secondary harness routing and all connections, especially for loose or damaged wiring. Also inspect your ignition coil — it may be faulty. The 3X signal is typically generated by the crankshaft position sensor via purple/yellow wires. Note: After replacing intake gaskets, these wires can sometimes melt or become dislodged when not properly secured to their mounting bracket.

The 3X signal originates from the purple/yellow wires connecting the crankshaft position sensor to the engine control module. After intake gasket replacement, these wires can be exposed or damaged if they are not properly routed and secured behind the intake manifold — especially near the EGR pipe. Make sure they're fully seated and protected.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! I'll check those areas carefully, especially the harness routing and mounting bracket. Can the ignition coil be tested with an ohm meter? If so, what resistance values should I expect to confirm it's working properly?
