I recently went to get my vehicle's emissions test ready, but when I started the car, the check engine light turned on. The OBD2 scan revealed trouble codes P0440, P0

After changing the air filter and performing other maintenance last week, my vehicle started having intermittent starting issues — sometimes it starts fine but then stalls unexpectedly. Given this history, I suspect a possible vacuum line disconnection or loosening. Specifically: \n- A vacuum hose connected to the throttle body's VSV (vacuum solenoid valve) \n- A vacuum line leading to the EVAP canister \nAlso worth checking: whether the gas cap is properly secured and if it’s an original Toyota part. A loose or incompatible gas cap can trigger these codes, especially in older models like the 2002 Toyota Echo.

I experienced exactly the same P0440, P0441, and P0446 codes on my son's 2000 Toyota Echo. Using an OBDlink scan tool connected to a laptop, I confirmed these codes. While driving performance wasn't affected, the vehicle failed the emissions test in Ontario — which is required for registration. The EVAP system prevents fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere; fixing it also helps reduce moisture ingress that could freeze gas lines during winter months. I began by visually inspecting all vacuum hoses and lines under the car. The gas filler pipe has multiple steel lines running from the filler cap to the EVAP canister, and I found significant corrosion — these were open to air, preventing proper system vacuum or vapor pressure retention. This was clearly a major issue. I replaced the entire gas filler line assembly for about $75 CAD at a local parts store. The installation took only about 20 minutes with one bolt. After replacing it, I reset the codes and completed the drive cycle procedure required by the emissions test system. The vehicle passed successfully. This fix is straightforward and highly effective for DIY mechanics. Work performed in fall 2013.
