P0130 O2 Sensor Fault on 2002 Chrysler Sunfire: Diagnosis and Repair Guide
Hi everyone, My check engine light came on recently, so I used a code reader to retrieve the fault code P0130 — O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 1). My understanding is that there are two oxygen sensors: one upstream (before the catalytic converter) and one downstream (after the catalytic converter). However, I'm unsure which sensor this specific code refers to. Can anyone clarify? I suspect the issue may be with the upstream O2 sensor, as it's more commonly affected by wear or contamination. Given that my 2002 Sunfire is over 15 years old and has had minimal maintenance, I believe replacement of the upstream sensor is warranted. The wiring appears intact, so I'm not seeing any obvious electrical issues. Are there other potential causes for P0130? Should I replace both sensors or just the upstream one? Thanks in advance for your insights — this information is very helpful! Spec36
The P0130 code typically points to the upstream oxygen sensor (pre-catalytic converter). However, given the age of your 2002 Sunfire, it's advisable to replace both the upstream and downstream sensors for optimal performance and emissions control.
