2002 Saturn L100 2.2L 4-Cylinder - P0440 OBD2 Code: Evaporative Emission System Fault
The service engine light appeared approximately three weeks ago. During an oil change visit, the vehicle was scanned and returned with diagnostic code P0440. The gas cap was inspected and found to be in good condition. A few days later, the 'change oil' indicator also illuminated, despite having recently completed an oil change. This new symptom raises questions about whether it's related to the P0440 issue or a separate problem. I'm trying to avoid costly evaporative emission system testing, such as a smoke test, and would appreciate any insight into how these symptoms might be connected.
The 'change oil' light and the P0440 evaporation system fault are two distinct issues. A smoke test remains the most reliable method to diagnose the evaporative emission system. As for cost, it's not overly expensive—many shops charge only about one hour of labor for a smoke test and diagnosis. You could spend significantly more on incorrect parts or repairs based on guesswork.
