I own a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo with a 3.4L V6 engine. The vehicle exhibits sluggish acceleration, particularly around 2200 RPM, where it bogs down. When I apply more throttle, the engine momentarily chokes before responding with improved power. After driving under these conditions for some time, the car triggers Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0420 — Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1). Typically, this code does not directly cause drivability issues. However, I'm wondering if any known drivability problems could trigger or be associated with P0420. The behavior feels similar to the transmission hesitating to shift into high gear until significant throttle input is applied. Has anyone experienced a situation like this? I'd appreciate any insights on possible root causes — especially related to exhaust system restrictions, O2 sensor replacement errors, or other mechanical factors. Thank you for your help. If the vehicle has high mileage and the O2 sensors are switching rapidly, it's worth checking whether the catalytic converter is restricted. You can verify this by using a vacuum gauge to measure positive pressure while the engine is under load. Alternatively, if you have an O2 sensor adapter, remove the downstream O2 sensor and take a pressure reading directly from its port. The only times I've seen P0420 combined with drivability issues are when there's an exhaust restriction — such as excessive backpressure — or when one downstream O2 sensor is replaced without replacing the corresponding sensor on the other side of the bank. Jeff, I have a 1997 Yukon with 122,000 miles and am experiencing similar symptoms. I previously had a P0430 code and mistakenly replaced only one downstream O2 sensor on Bank 1 — now the engine idles roughly and hesitates during acceleration. How exactly do I measure exhaust backpressure? Should I take the reading from the upstream O2 port when the sensor is removed? What should the normal pressure be under load? Also, did you mean to replace both sensors on the same side (bank), or both downstream sensors across both banks? Thank you for your guidance — it's very helpful. — Frank
