2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 Lacking P0340 Code: Diagnosis and Solutions

Model: 2002 Grand Cherokee 4.0 Fault Code: P0340 Posted: 2018-02-06 17:42

First-time poster, long-time forum listener — I'm currently troubleshooting a persistent P0340 code on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0. I've already replaced both the camshaft position sensor (CMP) and crankshaft position sensor (CPS), along with a new wiring harness for the CMP sensor. Additionally, spark plugs and ignition coils have been recently replaced. Despite these efforts, the P0340 code continues to appear. I’ve heard that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) could be at fault, but it was replaced just three years ago during a prior issue. I'm now looking for further diagnostic steps — any advice on what to check next would be greatly appreciated.

There are no other diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) present — make sure you're using an OBD2 scanner. The key trick here is often the lack of a signal or intermittent readings. Aftermarket parts from Jeep can sometimes be unreliable, so verify compatibility and quality. Check the freeze frame data to see if any abnormal engine conditions are recorded during fault occurrence. Use a graphing scanner to monitor CMP and CPS waveforms — gently shake the wiring harnesses while observing the signals; if the waveform drops or stops, it may indicate a loose connection or sensor failure.
