2002 Ford Taurus P1131, P0316, P0303, P0174 & P0171 Codes: Misfire, Lean Mixtures and Poor Acceleration Diagnosis

Model: 2002 Ford Taurus Fault Code: P0171 Posted: 2015-03-21 10:20

I'm experiencing multiple engine trouble codes on my 2002 Ford Taurus: P1131, P0316, P0303, P0174, and P0171. The check engine light flashes intermittently while driving instead of staying steady, and the car runs poorly with weak acceleration and delayed response. I believe these codes relate to an oxygen sensor issue, a misfire in cylinder 3, and lean air-fuel mixtures across both bank 1 and bank 2. As someone without formal mechanic training but experienced in DIY repairs, I'm looking for clear guidance on how to diagnose and fix this. I plan to start with replacing spark plugs—though I’m aware that cheap store-brand parts may not suffice—and inspect for vacuum leaks. I’m also unsure what 'system too lean' means technically. Any detailed explanations or step-by-step troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

Check fuel pressure and perform a fuel pressure leak-down test. Avoid using cheap spark plug brands—opt for quality OEM or high-performance parts. When removing the plugs, note their condition: wet, dry, black, or tan? Also inspect for vacuum leaks—these are common causes of misfires and lean conditions.

Thanks for the advice! I'll start working on this tomorrow morning and go through all your suggestions. Will update with my findings once I’ve tested everything.

Same issue occurred on my 2000 Ford Taurus—after trying various fixes, it turned out to be a faulty fuel injector in cylinder 3. Just sharing this experience for others facing similar symptoms.

I have a 2001 Ford Taurus where the P0303 code appears only when I come to a stop, and the oil light comes on at that time. Any insights into what might be causing this? Could it be related to engine temperature or sensor issues?

Don’t overlook oil pressure—especially if you're seeing misfires in cylinder #3. Low oil pressure can cause poor combustion and trigger misfire codes. Address this issue immediately, as it could lead to engine damage.

I had P0303 on a 2003 Ford Taurus wagon and found the root cause was a failing coil pack. I replaced all six coils individually and discovered that one of them was defective. The fix was simple—just swapping out the faulty coil—and it resolved the misfire completely. It’s one of the easiest repairs I’ve ever done on any vehicle.
