Vehicle: 2002 Ford Explorer XLT, 4.0L V6, 4WD Approximately one week ago, my fuel pump failed in my 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. I had it replaced along with the fuel filter. Since then, the Service Engine Soon light has activated and a diagnostic scan at AutoZone revealed code P045

I recommend returning to the shop that installed your fuel pump and having them inspect all evaporative emission system components, including proper connections of EVAP lines. Ensure they used a genuine Ford fuel cap, as aftermarket or non-compliant caps can trigger P0455.

I don't believe the issue is solely with the fuel cap. I recently installed a locking fuel cap due to local concerns about gas theft. The new cap seals significantly better than the original one. Additionally, whenever I stop at traffic lights or stop signs, I can detect a faint gasoline odor—only for a brief second. This could indicate an evaporative leak.

The fuel tank may have a leak somewhere. If you're detecting a gasoline smell during stops, it's likely an evaporation leak. A mechanic who installed your fuel pump should be able to identify the source—this could involve a failed seal around the fuel pump, a missing or disconnected vacuum line, or a compromised filler neck gasket.
