P0136 Fault in 2002 Ford Escape: Linked to Overheating and Head Gasket Concerns?

Model: 2002 Ford Escape Fault Code: P0136 Posted: 2015-10-18 12:05

A few days ago, my 2002 Ford Escape began overheating. I took it to a mechanic who replaced the water pump. After driving normally for about one day, the Check Engine Light (CEL) activated, and a P013-than code appeared — indicating an 'oxygen sensor circuit low voltage' fault. I'm wondering if this is directly related to the overheating incident. Could a failing head gasket be the underlying cause? The engine currently runs smoothly, but the code persists. Any insights into whether these issues are connected or what steps should be taken next would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'm experiencing the exact same issue with my 2002 Ford Tribute. After an overheating event, I replaced the water pump, upper hose, and radiator. Now, one week later, the check engine light is on — and the vehicle runs very roughly. I initially thought it might only be running on three or four cylinders, but a P0136 code (oxygen sensor circuit low voltage) has appeared. From my research, I've noticed that overheating issues in older Ford models can sometimes lead to problems with the oxygen sensor — possibly due to heat damage or a failing head gasket. Has anyone confirmed this connection? What's the recommended fix? I do all my own vehicle maintenance and am self-sufficient — I'm definitely not looking for a DIY shortcut, but rather clear, actionable advice. Please share if you've found a solution! I'm tired of spending money on unnecessary repairs.
