2002 Dodge Intrepid Check Engine Code P0440: Causes, Fixes & Diagnostics

Model: 2002 Dodge Intrepid Fault Code: P0440 Posted: 2008-02-25 12:13

I recently replaced both the gas cap and the purge solenoid on my 2002 Dodge Intrepid. After the replacement, the check engine light turned off. However, three months later it returned. I then removed the fuel tank to inspect the fuel lines for blockages, but found no obstructions. The code P0440 is now back — indicating a possible evaporative emissions system issue. What should I check next to resolve this problem?

Is the gas cap original from the dealer or aftermarket? This could affect the reliability of the fix.

The gas cap I installed was aftermarket. Could this be a contributing factor?

Aftermarket gas caps are often unreliable. It's more likely the issue lies with the Large Duct Pipe (LDP) or vent valve, not just the purge solenoid. Check community forums for discussions on LDP and vent valve failures in 2002 Dodge Intrepid models.

Is there a way to test the vent valve without visiting a dealer? Can a professional scan tool be used to actuate it and verify functionality?

Yes, take it to a shop with a proper diagnostic scan tool capable of actuating the vent valve. They should also have experience interpreting the results. Alternatively, consider replacing all components in the evaporative system to avoid recurring issues and bypass dealer dependency.
