P0152, P0174, P1196 Fault Diagnosis - 2002 Dodge Dakota V6 3.9L (Bank 2 O2 Sensor Issue)

Model: 2002 Dodge Dakota Fault Code: P0152 Posted: 2007-01-03 07:52

I recently purchased a 2002 Dodge Dakota with a 3.9L V6 engine and experienced significant off-road damage during a 4x4 outing last week. Shortly after, my vehicle began displaying two diagnostic trouble codes: - P0174: System Too Lean (Bank 2) - P1196: Catalyst Monitor Slow Response - O2 Sensor 2/1 (Downstream, Bank 2) After researching the codes, I discovered that in a V6 engine configuration, Bank 2 corresponds to cylinders 6, 5, and 4 — which are on the right side of the engine. The downstream oxygen sensor (O2 Sensor 2/1) is located after the catalytic converter on this bank. I visited a local mechanic who initially recommended replacing the right-side downstream O2 sensor in Bank 2. They charged $97 for diagnostic testing, which I declined as I already understood the issue. I instructed them to replace the part they identified and returned later when it arrived. However, upon re-scanning at an auto parts store, a new code appeared: - P0152: O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank 2, Sensor 1) This prompted me to realize I had made a critical error — the mechanic likely replaced the wrong sensor. Sensor 1 on Bank 2 is actually the upstream oxygen sensor, located before the catalytic converter. I am now returning to the shop today to have them replace the correct part (the upstream O2 sensor in Bank or the downstream one) and request that they return the previously ordered part for proper reinstallation. I want to ensure I’m addressing the right component based on accurate cylinder mapping. Clarification: In a 6-cylinder engine, cylinder numbering typically follows: - Cylinders 1–3 (left side): Bank 1 - Cylinders 4–6 (right side): Bank 2 Thus, Bank 2 is on the right side. Sensor 1 in Bank 2 refers to the upstream sensor. I’ve provided detailed information to help others avoid similar misdiagnoses.

Bank 2 corresponds to cylinders 4, 5, and 6 on a V6 engine — located on the right side. The P0152 high voltage code in O2 Sensor Circuit (Bank 2, Sensor 1) is likely caused by an intermittent sensor disconnection or improper wiring during prior repairs, especially if the upstream sensor was incorrectly replaced or left disconnected while the engine ran.
