2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser P1684 and P0118 Codes: Car Won't Start, Battery Replacement Help Needed

Model: 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Fault Code: P0118 Posted: 2014-08-09 17:14

My 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser is displaying fault codes P1684 and P0118. I recently replaced the battery, but the car still won’t start. After disconnecting the ECT sensor and the negative battery terminal for a few minutes, the issue persists. My mechanic previously replaced the ECT sensor and claimed it was fixed, but the problem remains. I’m not sure what’s wrong—could the codes be related to the battery disconnection or a wiring issue? The car doesn’t crank at all; it just won’t turn on. I’ve tried turning the key multiple times with no response. Can anyone help me understand these codes and what steps I should take next?

Why did you replace the battery? Was the ECT sensor actually replaced or just swapped? Did the mechanic perform any diagnostic testing? Disconnecting the negative battery terminal can trigger code P1684. You mentioned the car won’t start—do you mean it cranks but doesn’t start, or does it not crank at all? Do you have access to a digital multimeter (DVOM) or an OBD2 scanner? These tools are essential for accurate diagnosis.

The mechanic claims the issue is related to wiring signals being sent incorrectly, which causes the car to crank and start after a few attempts. Is this a known issue with older PT Cruisers? Can you confirm if this refers to a faulty signal path or sensor communication?

The mechanic says the problem is caused by wiring issues that result in intermittent cranking and starting after several attempts. However, I’ve not seen any battery disconnection during the last 50 tries or minutes—nor has my mechanic. Should I consider selling the car or try further diagnostics? This seems like a serious issue. Any expert advice would be greatly appreciated.

Code P1684 indicates that the battery was recently disconnected, which is likely what happened during your troubleshooting. Code P0118 points to an excessively high voltage reading from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor—this should be verified with a digital multimeter or OBD2 scanner. These codes do not typically prevent engine starting entirely. What does 'far wich' refer to? The statement about wires causing intermittent cranking and starting is unclear. Clarify that. A no-start condition must first rule out basic issues like fuel pressure or spark. You need proper diagnostic tools—simple key-on-off cycles may not retrieve all stored codes.
