2002 Chevrolet Express Van P0102 and P0302 Fault: Won't Start After Engine Shake During Acceleration
My 2002 Chevrolet Express Van 1500 with a 4.3L engine has reached 280,000 miles. Recently, while driving, the check engine light came on and the engine began shaking violently during acceleration. I managed to get home but now the van won't start — it turns over but does not catch. A code reader shows two fault codes: P0102 and P03002. The vehicle has had a new transmission and recent oil change, so these issues are likely unrelated to those repairs. I'm attempting to troubleshoot this myself to save on repair costs. What would you recommend as the first steps? Thanks for your help, Jeremy
DTC P0102 indicates a low frequency in the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor circuit. DTC P0302 points to a misfire in cylinder #2. Recommended troubleshooting steps: - Begin by inspecting the MAF sensor connector and wiring for loose connections or damage. - Check the air intake ducting for any leaks or obstructions — ensure no air enters after the MAF sensor. - Look for vacuum leaks, especially around the PCV system. For cylinder #2 misfire: remove and inspect the spark plug. Check for wet, black, or tan deposits. Confirm that the plug is receiving proper ignition by testing if it's firing using a spark tester.
