2002 Chevrolet Tracker ZR2 P0601 Code: No Spark, 10-Amp Draw Diagnosis

Model: 2002 chevrolet tracker Fault Code: P0601 Posted: 2016-06-25 19:28

Hi everyone, I'm fairly experienced with automotive diagnostics, but this 2002 Chevrolet Tracker ZR2 (2.5L V6) has me stumped. The vehicle was parked overnight and the next morning I found the battery completely dead. I used a jump pack to start it — the engine turned over fine, but there was no spark at the plugs. All fuses have been checked and appear to be in order. However, I discovered a persistent 10-amp draw when the negative cable is connected and nothing is powered (no key in ignition, no systems on). I isolated all fuses, but the draw remains unchanged. I also tried removing each wire connected to the ECM — the current didn't drop, suggesting the issue isn or within the ECM itself. The vehicle now displays a P0601 fault code (Fuel Pressure Regulator Control Circuit Malfunction). While I suspect the ECM might be misconfigured or require reprogramming, this doesn’t explain why it wouldn’t start initially — especially before disconnecting the ECM. My questions are: - What could cause the engine to fail to fire (no spark) in this scenario? - Could a faulty crankshaft or camshaft position sensor be responsible? - What might cause that 10-amp draw? Are aftermarket components like an alarm, radio, or remote starter a likely culprit? If I don’t get a response soon, please feel free to contact me at Snyder_auto @ yahoo. Thanks in advance for any insight!

Have you confirmed the presence of the P0601 code? Are there any other diagnostic trouble codes? Make sure to check fuses — not just visually, but with a multimeter. Specifically verify the ignition (20A) and fuel injection (15A) fuses. Also inspect relays such as the main relay or fuel pump relay; if they're stuck closed, this could cause an electrical draw. A 10-amp draw is often caused by non-original accessories — did you install any aftermarket devices like a radio, alarm system, or remote starter? Please provide more details if needed so I can assist further.
