P0420 Code on 2002 Chevrolet Camaro 3800: Causes and Solutions

Model: 2002 Camaro Fault Code: P0420 Posted: 2014-08-19 14:28

I'm experiencing a P0420 catalytic converter efficiency below threshold code on my 2002 Chevrolet Camaro with a 3800 engine. The vehicle has 52,000 miles total, and the code first appeared at 42,000 miles. I have no detected exhaust leaks and have already replaced one faulty ignition coil (found during diagnostics). I currently use Mobil 1 oil as recommended for new engines. The OBD II scanner shows a P0420 error for Bank 1, indicating the catalytic converter is not efficiently reducing harmful exhaust gases. Given that my car is only driven to car shows and weekend trips, it runs smoothly under normal conditions. I'm wondering if the oxygen sensor on Bank 1 (or both Bank 1 and Bank 2) might be faulty. Should I replace both O2 sensors? I've ordered three new ignition coils as a precaution. Any insight from others who have faced this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Steve

P0420 is a catalytic converter efficiency code — proper diagnosis requires a graphing scanner to monitor oxygen sensor voltages before and after the catalytic converter. In simple terms, if the catalyst isn't effectively cleaning exhaust gases, the post-catalyst O2 sensor readings should show a clear difference compared to pre-catalyst readings. Typically, when the post-cat O2 voltage mirrors the pre-cat voltage, it indicates the catalytic converter has failed. Since you have a 2002 Camaro, I assume it's stock — could you confirm? Misfires are often a precursor to catalytic converter failure. Also, do you have access to an OBD II scanner that provides live data? If so, sharing real-time sensor readings might help identify the root cause. For more details: https://www.obd-codes.com/p0420
