2001 VW Passat OBD2 Fault Codes P0011 and P0170: Causes and Fixes

Model: 2001 VW Passat Fault Code: P0011 Posted: 2016-03-25 03:58

I own a 2001 Volkswagen Passat with the check engine light illuminated and OBD2 diagnostic codes P0011 and P0170. Can you explain what these codes mean and what steps I should take to properly diagnose and fix them? Specifically, what does code P0011 indicate, and how is it related to valve timing or camshaft position? What about code P0170—does it point to a fuel mixture issue, and if so, what are the most effective troubleshooting steps for this problem?

Hi, I have the same OBD2 codes—P0011 and P0170—on my 2001 VW Passat V6 4Motion. I've already had a mechanic replace one of the oxygen sensors, but he's now suggesting replacing a timing component, as it might be related to the valve train. However, he's still uncertain if this will resolve the issue. Interestingly, the car was running fine until recently when the fuel level dropped low—could that have triggered the check engine light or contributed to these codes? Is there a plausible link between low fuel and sensor failures? Thanks, Mayank
