I'm currently experiencing a P0171 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) — 'System Too Lean Bank 1' — on my 2001 VW New Beetle Turbo with approximately 70,000 miles. The issue has been intermittent over the past four months. When I reset the code, it may remain dormant for a month or more before reappearing. I've already tried using fuel injector cleaner, but that hasn't resolved the problem. This weekend, I plan to inspect under the hood and investigate potential causes such as a faulty mass airflow sensor (MAS), vacuum leaks, or clogged fuel filter. Based on my experience with an Audi TT (which shares the same engine platform), a faulty mass airflow sensor is likely the root cause of P0171. After replacing the MAF sensor, I resolved symptoms including loss of power, erratic acceleration, and persistent lean bank 1 errors.
