2001 VW Jetta 2.0L Non-Turbo: Fault Code P1256 Explained and Fix

Model: 2001 VW Jetta 2.0 L Fault Code: P1256 Posted: 2013-08-13 06:42

My 2001 VW Jetta GLS with a 2.0L non-turbo, 4-cylinder engine (165,000 miles) is throwing fault code P1256. What does this mean? The car runs fine otherwise. I'm looking for clarity on what P1256 indicates and whether any sensor replacement or maintenance is needed. Thanks, Ed

Has fuel efficiency decreased? Code P1256 typically indicates an open or short circuit in the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor wiring to battery voltage (B+).

I haven't monitored fuel mileage yet. Should I replace the ECT sensor? According to my service manual, the ohm readings should be: cold (86°F): 1.5–20 ohms; hot (275°F): 275–375 ohms. Does this sound correct?

I replaced the ECT sensor, and after rechecking, fault code P1256 has disappeared. Thanks for the help!
