2001 VW Beetle P0606 Fault Code: Transmission Won't Engage in Drive at Idle
I own a 2001 Volkswagen Beetle with a 2.0L engine, currently at 122,000 miles. The check engine light is not on, but my OBD2 scanner detects fault code P0606. The issue I'm experiencing is that the transmission will not shift into Drive when idling—only after I accelerate to around 1500 RPM or manually shift through first gear (1st → 2nd → 3rd) does it engage properly. Once in motion, the transmission shifts smoothly with no slippage. This behavior has persisted for some time. Given that P0606 is related to the engine control module (ECM), I'm wondering if this could be a problem with the ECM itself, the transmission, or the valve body. Any insights or suggestions on how to diagnose and fix this would be greatly appreciated.
P0606 is not typically a DIY-level issue—it indicates a significant problem with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). For accurate diagnosis, refer to official OBD2 code reference: http://www.obd-codes.com/p0600-p069f
