PO332 and PO442 Diagnostic Trouble Codes on 2001 Chevrolet Suburban 5.3L V8 Vortec

Model: 2001 Suburban Fault Code: P0332 Posted: 2006-07-23 16:22

I own a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban with a 5.3L V8 Vortec engine and am currently experiencing persistent trouble codes PO442 and PO332. The PO442 code indicates an emission system issue, which typically points to a leak in the exhaust system—most commonly found in vacuum lines. I’ve already inspected and replaced spark plugs and wires with no improvement. Regarding the PO332 code, which relates to the knock sensor, I’m unsure of its exact location or appearance. If I could locate it, replacing the sensor would be a logical next step. However, I'm wondering whether cleaning the sensor might resolve the issue instead of full replacement. Is there any reliable way to test if the knock sensor is functioning properly? I have a scan tool that consistently shows two instances of both PO442 and PO332 codes. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

Cleaning the knock sensor is unlikely to resolve the issue. If you gently tap the exhaust manifold or engine block with a hammer and notice a change in RPMs, it suggests the sensor is still functional. However, if no response occurs, the sensor may be faulty. A replacement is often necessary—especially if there are no visible wiring issues between the knock sensor and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Also, check for engine pinging or knocking sounds, as this could indicate a more serious combustion issue.
