2001 Pontiac Montana Fault Codes P0135 and P0171: Causes and Diagnosis

Model: 2001 Pontiac Montana Fault Code: P0135 Posted: 2010-06-14 08:24

My 2001 Pontiac Montana originally displayed code P0135. After replacing both oxygen (O2) sensors, the vehicle now shows both P0135 and P0171. I'm concerned because P0171 should not appear when P0135 is present. P0135 refers to a heater circuit fault in the oxygen sensor. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) supplies power to the heater circuit and then controls ground, monitoring how long it takes for the sensor to reach operating temperature. If the sensor fails to heat up within the expected time, this code is triggered. Ground connection is only available during each ignition cycle and warm-up phase. P0171 indicates a lean air-fuel mixture in the exhaust system. However, this code should not appear when P0135 is active, suggesting a potential underlying electrical or sensor issue. I have cleared the codes and re-started the vehicle to see if either code returns. If one persists, further diagnostic testing—particularly on wiring and grounding—is likely needed.

P0135 relates to the oxygen sensor heater circuit. The PCM supplies power to the heater circuit and then manages ground connection while monitoring how long it takes for the sensor to warm up. If the sensor does not reach readiness within the expected time, this code is triggered. Note: Ground availability occurs only once per ignition cycle and warm-up phase. P0171 indicates a lean exhaust condition, but should not appear when P013-5 is active. This inconsistency suggests an underlying electrical issue. Clear the codes, restart the vehicle, and monitor for any recurrence. If either code returns, further electrical diagnostics—such as checking power and ground connections—are recommended.

What brand of oxygen sensors did you install during the replacement?
