2001 Pontiac Grand Am P0105, P0172, P0420, P0507 Diagnosis and Fix - Vacuum Hose Replacement Success

Model: 2001 Pontiac Grand Am Fault Code: P0105 Posted: 2017-12-23 21:11

My 2001 Pontiac Grand Am is showing several trouble codes: P0105 (MAP sensor circuit malfunction), P0172 (too rich fuel mixture), P0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold), and P0507 (high idle). The vehicle previously had its catalytic converter replaced a year ago and was stored for some time. When I recently started using it, the check engine light was on and codes appeared. After initial research, I discovered that a common issue in this model is a faulty vacuum hose connected to the MAP sensor. Replacing this hose resolved the stalling problem when coming to a stop. After the repair, I reset the system, and the car ran normally for about 300 miles before the check engine light returned with the same codes. Now, the traction control light is on intermittently — it turns off sometimes when starting the car, but pressing the button causes it to come back on. This has led me to suspect that one of the sensors might be triggering the ECM to disable traction control. The idle is slightly rough, though engine power feels normal (as I'm new to this vehicle), and there are no misfires at highway speeds. I am physically disabled but have been doing repairs myself in the past. In earlier years, I would have replaced every sensor blindly, but now I want to avoid unnecessary replacements. I’m looking for a clear diagnostic path — what should be my next steps? How can I prioritize which sensors or components to check without replacing everything? Also, is there a known connection between the traction control light and one of these specific codes (P0105, P0172, etc.) in 2001 Pontiac Grand Am models?

Start with the P0105. See trouble codes this form for causes/solutions.
