2001 Nissan Pathfinder P0171 and P0174: MAF Sensor Replacement Needed?

Model: 2001 Pathfinder Fault Code: P0171 Posted: 2009-03-30 10:19

I recently encountered the same OBD2 fault codes P0171 and P0174 on my 2001 Nissan Pathfinder. Last year, I followed advice from several forum posts that pointed to a dirty Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor as the cause. I cleaned the sensor and cleared the codes, which remained gone for about one month—enough time to pass my state emission inspection. However, the codes returned shortly after. Given that the MAF sensor is typically not dirtied this quickly, I'm wondering if it might be defective rather than just dirty. Before spending over $200 on a new MAF sensor, I want confirmation—should I replace it? I’ve heard concerns about remanufactured MAF sensors causing engine performance issues, and the best price I found was for a genuine Bosch sensor at slightly over $200. Do you recommend purchasing a new OEM-quality MAF sensor to resolve this issue permanently?

P0171 and P0174 fault codes in the 2001 Nissan Pathfinder are most commonly caused by a faulty Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor. While cleaning can sometimes help, it often fails because the sensor loses its calibration. In such cases, replacement is typically the only reliable solution for long-term fixes.
