2001 Oldsmobile Aurora P0420 Check Engine Light Returning After Converter Replacement

Model: 2001 OldsMobile Aurora Fault Code: P0420 Posted: 2007-07-09 17:33

My 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora V8 (79,000 miles, automatic transmission) recently developed a check engine light. I replaced the catalytic converter (universal brand), cleaned the fuel injectors, and the warning light initially disappeared. However, after two weeks of driving, especially on the highway, the check engine light returned. I'm now unsure whether the universal converter was low quality or if I should have installed an aftermarket unit instead. Additionally, I'm considering replacing the oxygen sensor—should I do that? How can I tell if my O2 sensor is faulty? I need help identifying which component is actually causing the P0420 code to reappear.

Use an oscilloscope to test the oxygen sensors. A cheap or low-quality converter is likely the issue—many universal converters fail to properly address the P0420 condition.

I'm not sure what you mean. I just replaced the converter about three to five months ago, so why would it come back now?

Lower-quality converters often fail to resolve P0420 issues. If engine problems exist—such as misfiring, oil or coolant burning, or poor fuel quality—the rear oxygen sensor may not function properly. On a scan tool or oscilloscope, if the rear O2 sensor follows the front one exactly, then the converter is likely defective.
