2001 Nissan Sentra XE 1.8L P0430 Code: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2) - Diagnosis and Fix Guide

Model: 2001 Nissan Sentra XE 1.8L Fault Code: P0430 Posted: 2007-07-19 17:31

I'm experiencing a recurring P0430 fault code on my 2001 Nissan Sentra XE 1.8L, indicating 'Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)'. My friend has an OBD-II scanner and confirmed the code appears twice during testing. The vehicle is equipped with four oxygen sensors: two located in the pre-cat section (top and bottom). I'm uncertain whether this model year has two pre-cats, as older FSM documentation for the 1.8L engine shows only one pre-cat, though it's based on a post-2002 specification. The P0430 code was cleared, but returned after five days with the Check Engine Light reactivating. What should be my first step in diagnosing and resolving this issue? Any technical insights or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

Check if the rear oxygen sensors are matching the voltage readings of the front sensors. If they're identical, it's likely that the catalytic converter is faulty. I've seen many Nissan models, especially older ones like the Sentra, suffer from misfires that damage the converter from the start—many converters fail early due to poor combustion or engine misalignment.

If the voltage readings are consistent between front and rear sensors, then the catalytic converter is likely defective. Is it safe to simply test the sensor signals at the engine plug, or should there be a specific testing point? Also, as a side note, Nissan's 2.5L QR25DE engines were particularly known for catalytic converter issues.

Which spark plug are you referring to? The term 'plug' may be ambiguous—does it mean the ignition coil or oxygen sensor location?
