P1401 Diagnostic and Fix for 2001 Ford Mustang 3.8L V6 - EGR Pressure Sensor Issue

Model: 2001 Mustang Fault Code: P1401 Posted: 2006-04-11 08:07

I own a 2001 Ford Mustang with a 3.8-liter V6 engine. I purchased it used with the check engine light on. The vehicle originally had a broken flange on the passenger-side exhaust manifold where it connects to the exhaust pipe. I repaired this by removing and welding the manifold. After fixing the issue, I read the diagnostic code P1401 and cleared it. However, the code returns every time I start the car after just a few minutes of operation. Multiple online sources suggest that the EGR valve might be the cause. Does my 2001 Mustang model have an EGR system, and could this be related? I'm looking for accurate troubleshooting steps to resolve this persistent P1401 code without further damage to the engine or emissions system. Thanks in advance for any advice or guidance.

Please forgive me if I'm not deeply familiar with Mustangs, but I believe the 3.8L engine does use a DPFE (Duty Pressure Feedback) sensor. This component is known to fail frequently in Ford and Mazda vehicles. According to my reference manual, code P140-1 indicates an EGR pressure sensor circuit malfunction with a high input signal. A high input typically means either an open circuit in the wiring or a faulty sensor itself. If your 3.8L is equipped with a DPFE sensor—which I believe it is—then this should be your primary area of focus. Check both the sensor and its associated wiring, vacuum lines, and connections. Be sure to inspect these during any exhaust manifold repairs, as loose or damaged components can interfere with sensor readings. I recall Ford issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) related to this issue on 3.8L V6 engines—this may provide additional guidance for diagnosis and repair. Best of luck, and I’d appreciate updates if you find a solution! Jeff
