P0101 and P0422 Fault Codes on 2001 Kia Rio: Causes and Solutions

Model: 2001 Kia Rio Fault Code: P0101 Posted: 2008-04-22 10:37

I recently encountered P0101 and P0420 fault codes on my 2001 Kia Rio. After clearing the codes multiple times, they returned alongside P0422. I replaced the air filter, which temporarily resolved the issue—however, the check engine light has reappeared with both P0101 and P0422 codes. Could a failing catalytic converter be responsible for triggering both of these diagnostic trouble codes? I'm seeking clarification on whether the catalytic converter can cause both P0101 and P0422 simultaneously, or if there's another underlying issue related to the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF).

No, a failing catalytic converter cannot directly cause P0101. The P0101 code is specifically linked to the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF), and while a clogged or malfunctioning MAF can indirectly affect catalytic converter performance, it does not necessarily trigger P0422 on its own. First, clean and inspect your MAF sensor for dirt or debris. Then, perform a full reset of the engine control unit codes. If the issue persists, consider replacing the MAF sensor as a next step.
