2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7L P0201 Code: Rough Running and Top-End Noise - Diagnosis & Fixes
Hello! I own a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.7-liter V8 engine. Today, while leaving work, my vehicle started running roughly and eventually died unexpectedly. After connecting a code reader, I found the P0201 diagnostic trouble code. I replaced the fuel injector as advised by some sources, but the problem persists—the engine still runs poorly with noticeable roughness and loud noise coming from the top end of the motor. I’ve been told it could be related to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), but I’d like to know if anyone else has experienced this issue. The car starts fine, but once running, it's very unstable. Any technical insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated—especially regarding what P0201 actually means and how to properly diagnose the circuit. Key points: P0201 indicates a fault in the injector #1 circuit, not necessarily that the injector itself is faulty.
The P0201 code does NOT indicate a failed fuel injector—it refers to a problem with the electrical circuit for injector #1. Part retailers often recommend replacement parts because it's a sales-driven suggestion. To properly diagnose: - Use an oscilloscope or noid light to check if the signal wire is receiving proper voltage (steady, flashing, or no signal). - With the key on and engine off, use a digital multimeter (DVOM) to test for 12V at the injector’s power terminal when in KOEO (Key On, Engine Off) mode. - Unplug injector #1 and verify that only one wire (power) is present—there should be no voltage on the signal wire from the injector to PCM. - Check continuity between the injector and the PCM to ensure there's a proper circuit path. A broken or open circuit here would explain the P02001 code.
