2001 Grand Prix 3.1L EGR Valve Wiring Issue: P0404 Code Fix and Correct Wire Connections

Model: 2001 Grand Prix Fault Code: P0404 Posted: 2013-02-27 05:26

Hello, The wiring harness for the EGR valve on my 2001 Grand Prix (3.1L non-turbo) has pulled out of its retention clip. I reinserted the wires as best as I could, but the vehicle is still displaying a P0404 code (Incorrect EGR Flow). I believe the wiring may be connected incorrectly. I connected the wires in this order from left to right when viewing the back of the connector: red, grey/black stripe, grey, brown, and black. Does anyone know the correct pinout for the EGR valve wiring on a 2001 Grand Prix 3.1L? The engine is a 3100 model with no turbocharging. Thanks, Gary

Try swapping the red and grey wires — connect the red to where the grey was originally, and the grey to where the red was. If the connector has come apart, consider replacing it with a new one for reliable connections.

I replaced the EGR valve connector myself, but I noticed all the wires were white — this might explain why my original setup didn't work. The color coding may not match the factory standard.

You mentioned a 3.8L? If so, you might still have access to the old connector. Try connecting the red wire to where it originally went on the connector — it's easier to do in practice than describe in text.

Since the wires came completely loose from the original connector, there’s no way to determine which wire was connected to which terminal originally. A new connector may be needed for proper wiring.

Now I understand the situation better — if possible, please share a photo or list of wire colors (e.g., pink, brown, black) so others can reference them when troubleshooting. This is a 3.8L model with five wires on the EGR connector? Confirming this would help clarify the pinout.

This is specifically a 2001 Grand Prix 3.1L (3100) with five wires: red, grey, grey/black stripe, brown, and black. I'm still getting the P0404 code after reassembly.

Looking at the connector from below — lock tab on top, terminals facing you — left to right: grey/black stripe, black, brown, grey, red. Please confirm if this is the correct orientation when viewing the back of the connector where wires enter.

Is that wiring order referring to where the wires go into the connector (back side), or where they connect to the EGR valve end? I’d like clarification on which side you’re describing — this will help ensure accurate wiring.

Wires entering the connector: Hold the connector in your left hand with the clip at the top. The terminals face you, and wires point toward you. From left to right: grey/black stripe harness wire connects to the first white terminal on the connector.
