2001 Grand Am with 3400 Engine and P0336 Crankshaft Position Sensor Code - Inspection Failure

Model: 2001 Grand Am Fault Code: P0336 Posted: 2008-04-23 04:40

I own a 2001 Grand Am equipped with a 3400 engine that is currently displaying fault code P0336, indicating a crankshaft position sensor issue. I recently replaced the sensor located on the rear side of the engine block, but the same P0336 code reappears immediately after. The vehicle runs smoothly and has been performing reliably since I acquired it about a year ago. However, I am unable to pass a New York State (NY) inspection due to this error. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help.

This issue appears challenging as there hasn't been much response yet. Thanks in advance for any solutions—members of this forum are known to have solid technical knowledge, so I'm confident someone here has encountered a similar problem.

Double-check the electrical circuit and wiring connections to ensure there is no short or poor grounding. A faulty circuit can trigger the P0336 code even after sensor replacement.

I have a 2000 Grand Am and discovered it has two crankshaft position sensors—one located behind the harmonic balancer and another on the rear side of the engine block. To access the rear sensor, you'll need a sensor puller, which can typically be rented at a parts store. The sensor is held in place by two small bolts. This setup might explain why the P0336 code persists after replacement—ensure both sensors are properly installed and functioning.
