2001 GMC Yukon P0430 Code: Catalytic Converter Efficiency Below Threshold After Replacement

Model: 2001 GMC Yukon Fault Code: P0430 Posted: 2016-03-30 15:33

My wife's 2001 GMC Yukon has recently triggered the Check Engine Light, and an OBD2 diagnostic scan revealed code P0430 — indicating catalytic converter efficiency below threshold. I replaced the catalytic converters last year, but this issue has reappeared. Given that the vehicle is stock and uses AC Delco parts, I'm wondering if there could be another underlying cause or what troubleshooting steps I should take to resolve this problem.

Did you experience any issues before or after replacing the catalytic converters? Are there any other diagnostic codes present? The vehicle is stock and uses AC Delco components, correct? Catalytic converters are expensive — often, underlying conditions cause their failure. Using low-quality parts can exacerbate this issue.

The P043-than code appeared only after the catalytic converter replacement.

Why were the catalytic converters replaced originally? If it was due to a specific fault, that information would be helpful. Is your vehicle fully stock? Are there any other error codes or performance issues present?

No additional diagnostic codes or performance problems. The catalytic converters were replaced because the check engine light came on and the code was triggered at that time — they were simply removed as empty shells before replacement.

Providing detailed, step-by-step information is essential for accurate diagnosis. If the catalytic converters were completely removed (gutted), a fault code should have appeared at that time. Replacing them and then encountering P0430 seems illogical. A recommended next step would be to monitor and record the voltage readings from both pre-cat and post-cat oxygen sensors. Pay close attention to the post-cat sensor data, and verify that the post-cat sensors are properly installed and functioning.
