2001 Ford Windstar P0171 and P0174 OBD2 Fault Codes: Causes and Fixes

Model: 2001 ford windstar Fault Code: P0171 Posted: 2009-02-01 14:24

Hello everyone, I recently checked my engine fault codes and found P0171 and P0174. Can anyone help me understand what these codes mean and how to resolve them? Additionally, I'm experiencing issues with both the speedometer and the odometer — they've stopped working. These seem unrelated to the engine codes, but I'd appreciate any suggestions. I’ve already checked all fuses and found none are blown. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan

Here are helpful resources for P0174 and P0175 codes: http://www.obd-codes.com/p0174 http://www.obd-codes.com/p0171 The speedometer issue might be caused by a blown fuse. Check all fuses in the cabin and under-hood fuse/relay box. Also, is the ABS warning light on? If so, or if the transmission isn't shifting properly, there could be an issue with the instrument cluster.

Thanks! Yes, the ABS light is illuminated. I was about to check my brakes next. The transmission seems to shift normally, but the odometer light is blinking — that’s essentially all the issues I’m currently dealing with.

2001 Ford Windstar models are known to have vacuum leaks in the engine system, often originating from intake O-rings or isolator bolts that connect the upper and lower intakes. The PCV hose is another common source. Additionally, the ABS light may be related to a loss of speed signal, which could affect instrument cluster functions.

^Amen. Also, don’t forget to inspect the variable intake runner system shafts where they exit the lower intake — those components are also prone to failure and are common points of trouble in this model.
