DTC P0122 Explanation for 2001 Ford Taurus SEL with DOHC Engine

Model: 2001 Ford Taurus SEL Fault Code: P0122 Posted: 2007-05-02 13:16

I recently installed a new Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) on my 2001 Ford Taurus SEL with DOHC engine, which has accumulated 25,000 miles. After the installation, I'm now receiving a DTC 'P0122 - Throttle Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Low Input'. Could someone please explain what this error means? Thank you for your help.

This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0122 indicates that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detected a signal from the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) that is below its minimum calibrated threshold of 0.17 volts. When installing the new TPS, did you properly adjust it according to the manufacturer's specifications? If the sensor output voltage remains below 0.17V, the PCM will trigger this code. Possible causes include an open or short-to-ground fault in the signal circuit, or a loss of the 5-volt reference voltage. I recommend first checking the wiring and connections for damage or corrosion. Then, use a multimeter to verify voltages at the sensor terminals. If you have access to a scan tool, you can check the throttle position percentage. If it reads below 3.4%, this suggests the TPS is out of proper adjustment.
