2001 Dodge Caravan P0442 Code: How to Fix EVAP System Leak and Clear Check Engine Light

Model: 2001 Dodge Caravan Fault Code: P0442 Posted: 2015-04-26 19:48

I own a 2001 Dodge Caravan Sport and recently received a check engine light triggered by fault code P0442. I replaced the gas cap, which is a common fix for this issue, but after driving it for several days, the warning light remains on. What steps should I take to permanently resolve this P0442 code? The EVAP system leak appears to be persistent despite the replacement of the gas cap.

P0442 indicates a small leak in the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system. A 'smoke machine' test is often used to accurately locate the source of the leak. For more details, see: http://www.obd-codes.com/p0442

I've now discovered two codes appearing on my vehicle: P0442 and P0445. Can anyone provide guidance on how to diagnose and fix both of these issues simultaneously?

The issue may be a short in the purge valve circuit. Please inspect the wiring harness connected to the purge valve, as well as the valve and solenoid itself for damage or malfunction.
