2001 Chrysler T&C Won't Start with P1684 Code - Diagnosis & Solutions

Model: 2001 Chrysler T&C Fault Code: P1684 Posted: 2016-08-03 08:05

My 2001 Chrysler T&C was impounded two days ago in New York City after breaking down on the highway. The vehicle failed to start and displayed fault code P1684, which is a power interrupt error. It died while driving and I currently have about half a tank of fuel. I've already checked the fuses, but the issue persists. P1684 typically indicates a power interruption to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or related circuits — possible causes include a disconnected battery, an open circuit in the TCM or PCM wiring, or a faulty fuse. While some users have suggested fuel pump issues, I'm still evaluating whether this is the root cause. I've confirmed that the vehicle has no other diagnostic codes when scanned. The only code present is P1684. I’ve also checked fuses under the hood (especially the IPM fuse), and basic electrical checks show 12V at the injectors and coil during a key-on, engine-off state. No spark or injector pulse is detected when cranking. I'm now considering whether the issue lies with the TCM fuse or relay, or if there's an underlying wiring problem. I've also heard that remote starters can interfere with these systems — I hope my vehicle does not have one installed.

I paid the $217 impound fee but now the car won't start and I don

P1684 is a power interrupt error — could be due to a disconnected battery, an open circuit in the PCM or TCM wiring, or a blown fuse. With your OBD-II scanner, are there any other diagnostic codes? Check fuses under the hood (especially IPM). Perform basic checks: 12V at injectors and coil when key is on. When cranking, verify spark and injector pulse. If no crank, inspect TCM fuse and relay. Note: It's possible a remote starter could be causing interference — ensure it’s not active.

Holy s**t — I just replaced the fuel filter. Will update if that resolves the issue.

I scanned the vehicle and only P1684 is present — no other codes detected.

The mechanic who previously diagnosed my van suggested trying a carb cleaner connected to a vacuum line. After doing that, it started up — this may indicate a fuel delivery issue, possibly related to the fuel pump. I'm now leaning toward fuel pump failure as the cause.
