P0102 OBD2 Code on 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo with 3.4L Engine: Causes and Fixes

Model: 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo Fault Code: P0102 Posted: 2006-07-23 08:59

I recently encountered a P0102 diagnostic trouble code after replacing the air filter in my 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo equipped with a 3.4L engine. The check engine light was not initially illuminated, and I have previously replaced the air filter multiple times without issues. I installed a Fram air filter, but the P0102 code appeared afterward. I've verified that all wiring connections to the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor are intact—power, ground, and signal circuit from MAF to Powertrain Control Module (PCM) are functioning properly. Despite this, the issue persists. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Clean the MAF sensor thoroughly. Check for any oil residue or debris on the new filter element—contamination is a common cause of P0102 in vehicles like the 2001 Monte Carlo.

I replaced the MAF sensor, and after testing, the code remained. I then installed a used sensor from a junkyard for about one-quarter the price of a new one—after that, the P0102 code disappeared and the vehicle ran smoothly again.
