2001 Chevy 1500 Z71 5.3L Engine P0404, P0171, P0174 and P0301 Fault Codes - How to Fix
I'm experiencing multiple OBD2 fault codes on my 2001 Chevrolet 1500 Z71 with a 5.3L V8 engine: P0174, P0171, P0301, and P0400. What steps should I take to diagnose and fix these issues? - P0171 and P0174 indicate lean mixtures in both fuel banks, which may stem from a dirty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, vacuum leaks, or low fuel pressure. - P0301 points to a misfire in cylinder 1, possibly due to faulty spark plugs, weak ignition components, or a clogged fuel injector. - P0404 indicates a problem with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. The EGR valve may be carbon-clogged; cleaning the pintle seat and ensuring it moves freely can help resolve this issue.
P0171 and P0174 both indicate lean mixtures across both engine banks. A dirty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is a common cause—remove the sensor, clean it thoroughly with brake cleaner or dedicated MAF cleaner, then dry it completely. Also check for vacuum leaks and ensure fuel pressure is within normal range. For P0301: This indicates a misfire in cylinder 1. Check spark plug condition in cylinder one; verify that there's good spark. The injector in cylinder one may also be clogged or malfunctioning. Regarding P0404: Inspect the EGR valve. Remove it and use a screwdriver to clean any carbon buildup on the pintle seat. Manually push the pintle up and down to ensure it moves freely. If it sticks, this could cause the code. Also confirm that cylinder one is receiving proper spark and fuel.
