P0446 Code Reappears in 2001 Chevrolet Impala LS 3.8L After Replacing Fuel Cap, Solenoids

Model: 2001 Chevrolet Impala LS Fault Code: P0446 Posted: 2015-04-16 13:30

I'm experiencing a recurring P0446 EVAP vent system fault code on my 2001 Chevrolet Impala LS with a 3.8L engine. I've already replaced the fuel cap, vent solenoid, and purge solenoid (all AC Delco components), but each time I reset the code, it returns immediately. I've inspected all accessible vacuum lines connected to the vent and purge solenoids and found no visible cracks or breaks. I also blew out the lines to clear any charcoal debris, yet the check engine light remains on and the P044-6 code persists. My next step is considering replacement of the fuel tank pressure sensor, with the EVAP canister as a last resort. However, I'm unsure about the exact location of the EVAP canister on my 2001 Impala model. The vehicle has only 50,000 miles on it and shows no other drivability issues. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

The PCM monitors the EVAP system by applying a controlled vacuum and then measuring how quickly that vacuum decays. If the decay rate exceeds a set threshold, it triggers the P0446 code. This does not necessarily point to a faulty vent valve — instead, it could indicate a small leak in the system preventing proper vacuum retention. Recommended next step: Use a smoke machine to perform a leak test and identify any hidden leaks. The EVAP canister on this model is located atop the fuel tank, accessible from the rear of the vehicle near the trunk area.
