P1404 Diagnostic and Fix for 2001 Buick LeSabre - EGR Valve and Wiring Issues

Model: 2001 Buick LeSabre Fault Code: P1404 Posted: 2011-05-04 16:33

My service engine soon light has remained on, and the OBD-II code P1404 is consistently detected. I have already replaced the EGR valve, both oxygen sensors, the mass airflow (MAP) sensor, and the intake manifold gasket. Vacuum levels are normal and the exhaust system is clear. After clearing the P1404 code using a scan tool, it returns after exactly 2 miles of driving. This recurring pattern leads me to suspect a voltage or ground fault in the EGR valve wiring circuit. Could there be an intermittent electrical connection or faulty grounding? Any insights on diagnosing this specific issue for a 2001 Buick LeSabre?

A dedicated scan tool capable of actuating the EGR solenoid is recommended. For a 2001 Buick LeSabre with a 3.1L engine, ensure the passageway from the EGR valve through the intake manifold to the throttle body is fully clear and unobstructed.

After encountering P1404, I conducted further research in this forum. Two users suggested that after installing a new EGR valve, try unplugging it electrically, then erase the stored codes using a scan tool. After turning off the ignition and re-plugging the EGR valve, the code did not return during subsequent drive cycles. The vehicle passed emissions testing successfully. I'm now fully satisfied with this solution. Thank you to the forum for providing such practical troubleshooting advice—no more P1404 errors!
