2001 Buick Century P0336 Fault: Where is the Crankshaft Position Sensor Located and How to Replace It?

Model: 2001 Buick Century Fault Code: P0336 Posted: 2015-10-25 18:26

Hi, I own a 2001 Buick Century Custom 3.1L and am experiencing a P0336 crankshaft position sensor fault. Could someone please confirm the exact location of the crankshaft position sensor and provide step-by-step guidance on how to replace it? I'm looking for clear instructions so I can safely perform the repair myself.

The P0336 code indicates a problem with the 24X crankshaft position sensor. The electrical connector is typically located on the left side of the engine, near the knock sensor. To replace the 24X crank sensor, you'll need to remove the serpentine belt and loosen the harmonic balancer bolt. Then use a harmonic balancer puller to carefully remove the harmonic balancer. Once the balancer is off, you can access and remove the 24X crankshaft position sensor bolts. When reinstalling, apply thread sealer to the harmonic balancer bolt, torque it properly, and ensure both the balancer and crank sensor bolts are securely tightened. I recommend testing the signal, power, and ground wires from the connector to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) using a DC voltmeter and a scan tool for accuracy. If readings are inconsistent or faulty, replacing the sensor is the safest course of action.
