2001 Ford Ranger P0453 and P0446 EVAP System Faults - Diagnosis and Repair Guide

Model: 2001 4.0 Ford Ranger Fault Code: P0446 Posted: 2014-02-14 19:15

I own a 2001 Ford Ranger with the 4.0L engine, and I'm currently encountering two EVAP system fault codes: P0453 (EVAP system pressure sensor high) and P0446 (EVAP system vent control fault). As someone not deeply familiar with the EVAP system, I need guidance on which components to inspect and test before submitting for smog certification after a 2004 4.0L engine swap. What specific parts should I check or replace to resolve these codes? Any recommended diagnostic steps or reference points from factory service manuals would be greatly appreciated.

Inspect the vent valve and solenoid circuit, as well as the EVAP pressure sensor itself. These are common failure points in the 2001 Ford Ranger's EVAP system.

I successfully resolved both P0446 and P0-453 issues by identifying three wires that were never properly spliced into the 4.0L engine harness—these connections were causing the check engine light to activate. After reconnecting them to their correct circuits, the codes cleared. However, a new code P0443 has appeared. I've verified the wiring of the EVAP canister purge valve and confirmed it's connected correctly. My current concern is the voltage supplied through the light green/black wire with KOEO—according to factory specifications, this should be around 12V. I'm currently measuring just over 12V on the red wire, but I'm unsure if this indicates a wiring issue or simply a reading error. Any clarification would be helpful.
