2000 Toyota RAV4 PO446 EVAP System Fault: Diagnosis & Fix Guide

Model: 2000 Toyota RAV4 Fault Code: P0420 Posted: 2006-11-29 15:11

My 2000 Toyota RAV4, with 50,000 miles and a manual 4-cylinder engine, has had the check engine light on for three weeks. Recently, it's started having difficulty starting. The diagnostic code is PO446 — indicating an EVAP Emission Control System Vent Circuit Malfunction. I understand this issue can stem from several causes: leaks in hoses, a clogged carbon canister, or a faulty purge solenoid. Could it also be related to a sensor failure? I have four specific questions: 1. Is a carbon canister the same as a vapor canister? 2. Which sensor controls the Evaporative Emission Control System? 3. Is the purge solenoid primarily an electrical issue or could it be mechanically faulty? 4. What are the most likely causes of this problem? One additional symptom: when I start the car, it often coughs out a large black cloud. Thanks for any insights — having a tough day with my vehicle, Cara

The carbon canister and vapor canister are indeed the same component. This is a common failure point in Toyota vehicles. Overfilling the fuel tank frequently contributes to repeated EVAP system failures. The EVAP system includes multiple valves and solenoids, any of which could trigger code PO44 or malfunction — either due to electrical issues or mechanical blockages. These components often become clogged as the canister degrades over time. For accurate diagnosis, a scan tool capable of opening and closing solenoid valves is ideal. If unavailable, using a digital multimeter (DVOM) to check resistance values across each component provides useful troubleshooting data. The vent solenoid located on the air cleaner housing is a likely culprit.
